USA! USA!

Going, Going, Gone…

It’s not an auction, but even Ben knows that the Reds probably are, at the most, sellers and at the least, standing pat at this no-waiver trade deadline. Oh, it’s not Hunter Greene’s fault—he’s pitching like the ace of the staff should, not allowing a runner until the fifth inning against the fourth-place Rays on Sunday, and not allowing a hit until the sixth. Somehow, the Reds still lost the game 2-1, dropping two of three in Tampa. It’s not Elly De La Cruz’ fault, either--he got on base four times, stole four bases, and the Reds still couldn’t find a way to get him home. And the hottest hitter in the league, Rece Hinds, was sent back to Louisville when TJ Friedl was activated. The Reds come back home to face the Cubs—and could have a whole new lineup by then.

USA! USA!

Let’s face it, Ben enjoyed his time in France as a bona fide 18th century celebrity, but it’s this latest generation of Americans now taking over Paris, at least early in these Olympic games. The US leads in the initial overall medal count, with China and host country France not far behind. And a special congrats to Cincinnati’s Carson Foster, bringing home bronze in the grueling men’s 400IM. This week, women’s gymnastics takes the spotlight with all eyes on Simone Biles, who already has been impressive in qualifying.

Bengals camp drama

It wouldn’t be training camp without some issues. Will Ja’Marr Chase practice, or will he keep up his silent protest over not having a new contract? Is Sam Hubbard really OK after being carted off the practice field with a knee injury? (Bengals say it’s not serious) And can Joe Burrow escape camp without injury? This week starts public access to the Bengals’ workouts, so everyone can see how the team is preparing for the season. Hold your breath for an injury-free camp. And folks, football is back Thursday! The Bears take on the Texans in the Hall of Fame Game on August 1.

Ben’s best bet

Speaking of football, or “futbol” as they call it, FC Cincinnati starts Leagues Cup play on Thursday against Queretaro FC. Last year the Orange and Blue were eliminated in the first knockout round and are looking to make a better showing this time. Also, FC Cincinnati’s newest acquisition Chidozie Awaziem, may be available for Leagues Cup action. Bet MGM has FC as a favorite in this first round—count on the home team to try to avenge last year’s showing and go deeper into Cup play this time around.
