The Key for the week of June 15, 2026

USA, USA

After the weekend victory over Paraguay, the United States faces its biggest Group D test yet on Friday, June 19, when it takes on Australia at Seattle's Lumen Field. Both teams enter the match with three points after opening victories, making this a potential battle for first place in the group and an opportunity to take a major step toward the Round of 32. Analysts view the U.S. as a slight favorite, but many believe Group D remains one of the most competitive groups in the tournament.

Australia arrives brimming with confidence after a disciplined 2-0 victory over Türkiye, a performance that showcased the Socceroos' trademark defensive organization and counterattacking style. The matchup presents a fascinating contrast: the United States will likely control possession and push forward, while Australia will seek to frustrate the Americans and capitalize on mistakes. A U.S. victory would all but secure advancement to the knockout stage, while an Australian upset would dramatically reshape the group race heading into the final round of matches.

The trade deadline is near…

And the once-optimistic Reds front office now has difficult decisions to make come trade deadline time in a little more than a month. On a team that was built, in theory, for a return to the post season, now has its pitching ace still on the shelf, a slugger who hit 49 home runs last year now is batting .215 with five home runs, and too many worn out bullpen arms. It would take a June turnaround of fortunes to make the Reds relevant in the “buy” market, so don’t be surprised if some familiar names are shipped out for future “prospects.”

We are the champions

Congratulations to the NY Knicks, who somehow were behind in each and every game with the Spurs and still managed to win the NBA Finals, ending a 53 year championship drought. Congrats also to the Carolina Hurricanes, who last claimed Lord Stanley’s Cup 20 years ago. Carolina had the second best record in the league this season behind Colorado, and played like it to win in six games over Las Vegas. Head coach Rod Brind'Amour, who lifted the Stanley Cup as Carolina's captain in 2006, led the Hurricanes into the play-offs as the top seed in the Eastern Conference and only lost three matches as they saw off the Ottawa Senators, the Philadelphia Flyers, the Montreal Canadiens and the Golden Knights en route to the title.
