Merging Medicine and Culture
In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re shining a spotlight on Dr. Alessandro "Sandro" de Alarcon, a true champion in both the medical and Hispanic communities. Dr. de Alarcon’s remarkable career as the Director of the Center for Pediatric Voice Disorders at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and his role as a professor at the University of Cincinnati make him a key figure in advancing pediatric care, particularly in the treatment of airway reconstruction and pediatric voice disorders.
A Path Inspired by Science and Mentorship
When asked about what inspired him to pursue a career in medicine and research, Dr. de Alarcon reflects on a pivotal moment during his time working in a pediatric allergy lab at the University of Virginia. Under the mentorship of Dr. Peter Heymann, he had the opportunity to conduct clinical research on RSV infections in children. This experience not only sparked his love for scientific discovery but also taught him the direct connection between lab work and patient care, shaping his desire to integrate research into his medical career. Dr. Heymann’s guidance and the autonomy he gave Dr. de Alarcon were instrumental in solidifying his path toward becoming both a clinician and researcher.
Navigating Dual Identities: A Cultural Foundation for Leadership
Dr. de Alarcon’s cultural heritage played a profound role in his academic and personal trajectory. Growing up with both American and Guatemalan roots, he learned early on the importance of embracing dual identities. His high school experience, where he captained an international soccer team, taught him valuable lessons about leadership and collaboration across cultures. Navigating these complexities helped him cultivate a leadership style that values diversity of thought and background, which he applies not only in his medical practice but also in his research and team management.
Pioneering Pediatric Voice Disorder Treatments
Among his many accomplishments, Dr. de Alarcon is particularly proud of the work his team has done in improving treatments for children with voice problems following airway reconstruction. When he began his fellowship, the field was underdeveloped, but his multidisciplinary team has since revolutionized the assessment, treatment, and surgical interventions for these conditions. Additionally, Dr. de Alarcon takes immense pride in his two children, with whom he and his wife instill a strong sense of character and pride in their Hispanic heritage.
