Footsteps for Freedom
With Veterans Day approaching, it’s time to rally together to honor those who’ve served our country. This year, we have an incredible way to show support, right here in Cincinnati: the 2024 DAV 5K. Set for Saturday, November 9, this annual event is more than just a race; it’s a meaningful experience to raise awareness and fundraise for those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.
The DAV (Disabled American Veterans) organization has been a powerhouse of support for ill and injured veterans for over a century. With its headquarters in Northern Kentucky, just outside Cincinnati, DAV leads national efforts to provide veterans and their families with essential resources, from benefits assistance and employment resources to transportation for medical appointments and transition services as they adjust to civilian life. Every dollar raised through events like the DAV 5K goes directly into these services, ensuring veterans receive the support they need and deserve.

Being headquartered here means DAV is deeply rooted in our Cincinnati community, where its work touches lives not only locally but also on a national scale. The annual DAV 5K, now in its 11th year, has become one of the city’s most anticipated community events. People come together to honor veterans, connect with each other, and help fund DAV’s mission. Plus, with downtown Cincinnati’s buildings lighting up green, the whole city joins in a powerful visual tribute to our veterans.
Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just looking to show support, the DAV 5K has something for everyone. It’s a run, walk, roll, or ride, meaning participants of all abilities can join in.
Here’s a peek at what’s in store:
A Moving Opening Ceremony: The event kicks off with an opening ceremony to honor our veterans. Expect inspiring speeches from veterans, DAV leaders, and sometimes local dignitaries who remind us why we’re all gathered here.
Scenic Course at The Banks: The race route runs along Cincinnati’s beautiful Banks area, providing scenic views of the river with downtown’s iconic architecture as a backdrop. There’s something magical about seeing hundreds of participants united, many proudly displaying American flags or wearing insignia from their or their loved ones' military branches.
Participant Perks: Registered participants receive a race packet with a commemorative T-shirt, a race bib, and often a DAV-branded item like a pin or medal. And crossing the finish line comes with an added sense of pride, knowing that every step helps make a difference in a veteran’s life.
Post-Race Festivities: After the race, enjoy refreshments and a chance to connect with other attendees. Whether you’re mingling with veterans, fellow supporters, or DAV staff, it’s an ideal opportunity to soak in the community spirit. Photo stations are also set up around the event, so you can capture your memories and show support on social media to help spread the word.
How to Get Involved
Register for the Race: Sign up and make sure you’re ready to participate on November 9. You can choose to run, walk, roll, or ride, so don’t worry if you’re not a marathon runner—this event is all about showing up and honoring veterans.
Donate to DAV: If you can’t attend, consider donating. Every dollar helps DAV continue its mission, from providing job fairs for veterans to transporting them to essential medical appointments.
Volunteer or Spread the Word: Volunteers play a huge role in making the DAV 5K a success. If you’re interested, reach out to DAV to see how you can help. Alternatively, sharing the event on social media or with friends and family goes a long way in raising awareness.
The DAV 5K isn’t just a race; it’s a visible, hands-on way to show veterans they’re not alone. For many who’ve served, transitioning back into civilian life can be challenging, particularly if they’re dealing with injuries or illnesses tied to their service. DAV ensures these veterans receive lifelong support, whether that’s through benefits, career resources, or community connections. And with every participant who steps up, DAV’s reach grows stronger.
So, as we head toward Veterans Day, consider how you’ll honor those who’ve served. Register, donate, or volunteer—and be part of a community that stands with our nation’s heroes. Join us on November 9 for the DAV 5K at The Banks, and let’s make this Veterans Day one to remember.
