A Journey Through The Culture
Whether you know it or not, hip hop has permeated almost every facet of your life, from mainstream fashion, music and language and the Cincinnati Art Museum has brought it all together for it’s latest installment. This exhibit is a powerful tribute to hip hop's deep roots and far-reaching influence on art and fashion. From June 28 to September 29, 2024, the museum transforms into a vibrant celebration of over 100 works, including pieces by the legendary Jean-Michel Basquiat and fashion from iconic brands like Cross Colours. Curated by the Jason Rawls, this exhibit dives into the four pillars of hip hop: B-Boys, DJs, emcees, and graffiti artists, illuminating how these elements have shaped contemporary art.
I had the pleasure of checking out the panel discussion on the opening night, and it was electric. The panel featured heavy hitters like Jason Rawls, Cynthia Amnéus, Billy Carter from Shake It Records, and Cincinnati’s own DJ Mr. Dibbs. Needless to say, you couldn’t really ask for a better panel. They went deep into hip hop culture, breaking down the art of collecting whether it's vinyl or vintage threads. Billy Carter dropped a gem, comparing the search for a perfect breakbeat to hunting for a single sentence in a library full of books. It’s that kind of dedication and passion that makes this exhibit so special.
The discussion also highlighted the magical moments when Rawls and Mr. Dibbs geeked out over breakbeats. For those who get it, it was like hearing an old friend speak. For the uninitiated, it was an enlightening dive into the world of those 3-8 second drum breaks that have been the backbone of countless tracks over the past fifty years. These breaks are the hidden gems of music history, shaping the soundscapes we know and love today.
Every piece in this exhibit bridges the gap between music and visual art, showing how deeply intertwined these forms of expression are.
This exhibit is more than just an art show; it’s an experience. It’s a journey through the history, culture, and soul of hip hop. Whether you’re an old-school head or new to the game, there’s something here for everyone. Plus, with events like artist talks and CAM Kids Day, the museum is making sure this celebration of culture is accessible to all.
Tickets are $12 for adults, with discounts for seniors, students, and children. And for those looking to save a buck, there’s free admission on Thursday nights and during special events. So, no excuses—get down there and immerse yourself in the art, fashion, and history that make up the rich tapestry of hip hop culture.
