Rivalry with a Cause
The Crosstown Shootout is more than just a basketball game—it’s an all-out battle of pride between the University of Cincinnati (UC) and Xavier University (XU). While the rivalry often divides us into Bearcats and Musketeers, one event proves that even the fiercest of competitors can unite for a greater cause: the Crosstown Foodout. And this year, as the season of giving is in full swing, we’re shifting the focus of our “Drinks and Dining” column to shine a light on how these two universities are turning competition into compassion.
The Crosstown Foodout is a spirited initiative where UC and XU go head-to-head, not on the court, but in a friendly contest to stock their respective food pantries. This annual drive tackles student food insecurity—an issue affecting more and more college students every year. UC’s Bearcats Pantry & Resource Center and XU’s The Store have both seen record numbers of students seeking assistance, with UC serving over 1,500 students and XU logging more than 1,100 visits in a single semester. These numbers remind us that hunger doesn’t take a timeout.
Let’s talk strategy. For the Bearcats Pantry, the wish list includes non-perishable foods like canned fruits, vegetables, peanut butter, rice, and pasta. They also need hygiene items such as shampoo, toothpaste, and feminine products, as well as household staples like laundry detergent and disinfectant wipes. For those wanting to make a digital assist, UC offers an Amazon Wishlist where you can purchase items that ship directly to the pantry. Or, you can make a financial donation through the UC Foundation to ensure they have the flexibility to address urgent needs.
Over at XU, The Store is calling for canned meats, granola bars, microwaveable meals, and even fresh produce to keep their shelves stocked. Hygiene products and dietary-specific items—like gluten-free pasta and sugar-free options—are also high on their list. Like UC, Xavier makes it easy to donate online with their Amazon Storefront and crowdfunding platform. If you prefer to drop off items, reach out to thestore@xavier.edu to coordinate your donation.
The impact of these donations is enormous. Beyond meeting basic needs, the food pantries provide professional clothing for job interviews, ensuring students can focus on their future without worrying about their next meal. And the timing couldn’t be better—as we cheer on our teams in the Crosstown Shootout, we can also support students by donating food, hygiene items, or even a few dollars.
So, whether you’re toasting a Bearcat victory with a craft beer or celebrating a Musketeer win with a signature cocktail, remember to give back. This Crosstown Foodout is the perfect way to channel your team spirit into something that matters. As Cincinnatians, we’re united by our love of good food, good drinks, and our incredible community. Let’s make this season of giving count.
